Tooth whitening
Tandestetik Stockholm also specializes in tooth whitening, which can be a very effective way of lightening the natural colour of your teeth without removing any of the tooth’s surface. It is not possible to completely change the color, but it can lighten your existing shade of teeth.
There are a variety of reasons why you might get your teeth whitened. Let’s face it, very few people have brilliant-white teeth, and our teeth will generally also become more discolored over time. Your teeth will also likely be stained on the surface simply by the food and drinks you consume. Chief among these are tea, coffee and red wine. Smoking is known to have a substantial impact on the shade of your teeth too.
Calculus or tartar are also known to affect the color of your teeth. In some cases, there may be some staining under the surface, which can be caused by certain types of antibiotics or by tiny cracks in the teeth which absorb the stains on your denture.
Professional bleaching is the most common method we use to deal which the above occurrences. Our experienced dentists will assess if this treatment is best-suited to your own specific circumstances. The procedure consists of placing a rubber shield or a gel on your gums to protect them. Then we apply a whitening product to your teeth, using a specially made tray which fits into your mouth to act as a mouthguard.
The active ingredient in the product we use is generally hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. As the active ingredient is broken down, the oxygen permeates the enamel on the teeth and as a result, the tooth color lightens up, thus achieving the desired effect.
Tandestetik Stockholm usually performs the total treatment within three to four weeks. You will be required to make two or three visits to our clinic to finalize the procedure. A mouthguard will be made by taking impressions of your denture during the first appointment. Once we start the treatment, you will need to continue the treatment at home. This calls for regular applications of the whitening product over two to four weeks, for a period between 30 minutes and one hour each time.
However, we also have the option of using some new products which can be applied for up to eight hours at a time. This means you can get a satisfactory result in as little as one week.
Other procedures: Laser whitening or ‘power whitening’ is also available to patients. This procedure requires a rubber dam to be placed over your teeth to protect the gums, and a bleaching product is applied onto your teeth. This is followed by a light or laser being shone on the teeth to activate the whitening agent. The light speeds up the reaction of the whitening product and the colour change is usually achieved far more rapidly. Laser whitening can allow your teeth to attain up to five or six lighter shades.
The Tandestetik Stockholm team will need to assess your teeth to ensure that you are suitable for this treatment. This procedure usually takes approximately one hour.
The effects of whitening generally last up to three years, but it varies substantially from person to person. The effect is less likely to last as long if you smoke and eat or drink foods and beverages that are known to stain teeth.
What are the possible side-effects?
Some patients might suffer from cold sensitivity during or following the treatment, or alternatively can experience gum discomfort, a sore throat or white patches on the gum line. These symptoms are usually temporary and recede within a few days of the finished treatment.
Tooth whitening only lightens your existing tooth colour and only works on natural teeth. It will not work on any type of false teeth, i.e., dentures, crowns and veneers.
Keep your teeth white for longer by cutting down on foods and drinks that are known to stain teeth. We recommend the following tips to take care of your teeth:
- Brush your teeth last thing at night and at least one other time during the day.
- Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks.
- Visit us regularly.
